History:
setting
Takoda's world is pretty much just modern day Earth. At least, up until the alien invasion. Humanity was subjugated in a manner of months, large cities stripped of all their precious metals and left husks of what was once civilization. Labor camps that held humans like literal cattle were built and scattered throughout, mostly in the once highly populated areas. They're large and daunting, made into "rings" that spread outward from the center. That means if someone manages to climb a wall they will be faced with another, then another. Escaping is near impossible. Hundreds of thousands of people are crammed into each ring, meaning not a day goes by when you aren't shoulder to shoulder with others. Sometimes the camps get so crowded it's impossible to lay down and sleep. The conditions are so bad that sometimes humans will volunteer to go on something that they have dubbed the "suicide bus". No one actually knows what happens when people board the buses - the only thing that's certain is whoever boards a bus never comes back. In truth, people who volunteer for the bus are basically turned into a protein paste.

A common sight, aside from the camps and routine buses pulling in and out of them, are large obsidian-like obelisks that stretch so far into the sky you can't see the top. They almost appear as an optical illusion and are impossible to comprehend when looking up at them, giving a feeling of "wrongness". When the invasion happened these obelisks touched down onto the tops of buildings, crushing them with absolutely no resistence, remaining in their place.

As for the Judge themselves, the most common ones to see are the foot soldiers, usually accompanied by smaller ships used to collect materials they deem useful to bring back to their larger ships. Very rarely will you see the "higher ranked" Judge out and about, but it's not impossible. Whenever they see humans the only thing they will say is, "submit, or be mercifully subdued". Other than that, they don't communicate much with humans. Nothing is known about them other than what is observed. At the rate the Judge strip the earth of all of its resources, it's clear humanity only has a few years left before the Judge get all they need and move on. Whatever communities are left live in the rural parts of civilization, hidden away in the hopes that the Judge won't notice them.

Takoda's timeline
•Born October 3rd, 1982 in Minnesota. He grew up with three siblings and five cousins. They were all very close, his father always tried to impart helpful wisdom unto Takoda. Takoda was always brash and struggled with anything adjacent to expressing feelings or dealing with empathy. One of the lessons he struggled with most was his father’s insistence that he learn to help others in need and to be compassionate. He didn’t understand. Vagueness, platitudes, and abstract ideas confused and frustrated him, and his father was full of them.

•As soon as he turned 18 and was able, he joined the army in order to help in a way that suited him best. That is, to take direct action. The concrete solution, nothing to figure out.

•At the age of 26, he rose to the rank of sergeant after serving as a drill sergeant for two years. He took his military career seriously, and despite never having understood anything his father told him he felt that he was still following his example, just in his own way.

•Got married not long after to a woman named Carol, despite their marriage being absolutely insane to the point where Carol attempted to stab him with a fork for refusing a pancake. He stayed with her because he was drawn to her “passion” and could not tell the difference between “passion” and “really fucking unhealthy”. At least for a while, but by the time he realized…he did nothing about it.

•2018 rolls around while Takoda is on a 30 day leave when the first contact with the alien race that became known as “The Judge” is made. Name earned because they deemed earth, as well as many other planets, unworthy.

•They are so technologically advanced beyond comprehension that in months they’re conquering the earth, taking a special interest in metals, and stripping the globe of everything both nailed down and not.

•Takoda is luckily military trained and was able to get to his wife (who he may have been on his way to in order to diffuse a tense situation between her and a neighbor) out of the city in the middle of all the commotion. He was able to act fast and keep them safe, though any attempt he made to get into contact with his family was a failure.

•They eventually find themselves in the company of a group holed up in Crater Lake National Park. Takoda appeals to their leader, Nia, by explaining that he has military experience and can help out. She agrees and allows them to stay, with Takoda eventually becoming in charge of security and munitions.

• Carol leaves him for a man named Ron who somehow got his hands on a cow. A hot commodity. Takoda is actually relieved by this, though insulted at the same time.

• A couple of years down the line, Takoda and a couple others go on a rescue mission to save Nia's son, who had been taken to one of the many Judge encampments. They are notoriously nearly impossible to escape, so naturally they're caught just outside of the camp. In order to get the others to safety, Takoda opts to distract the Judge as they get away. He comes out into the line of sight of their pursuers and waits for them to advance on him, pretending to "subdue". Once close enough, he holds out a pipe bomb he carried with him in case he ever got captured, which he then uses to take out the Judge present, as well as himself.

Personality:
• Takoda is decisive, which is often a turn-off to most considering his questionable morals. He knows people will balk at the hard choices and being in charge of the safety of the camp you can’t afford to let morality get in the way of survival. If he’s on a run and comes across someone begging for help, but he either doesn’t know if it’s a trap or there are Judge too close by, he will not hesitate to leave the person behind. His own safety and the safety of those he’s on a run with/his camp are what comes first, no matter the cost. While his final act appears can be considered a contradiction, Takoda knew there was no way for them all to escape the notice of the Judge who were currently searching the area. And while they're slow, they could have ended up following them back to their camp. Like many others who were unfortunate victims of his cold and clinical decision making, he didn't hesitate to hold himself up to that same standard for the sake of Crater Lake, even though it meant his death.

• This brings us to his short temper and casual interactions. At camp, it’s more difficult for him to maintain his steely composure (and that’s not to say he doesn’t snap out on a run, but snapping usually comes in the form of a verbal snap than anything that would endanger the objective). Aside from the fact that he is, most times, exhausted from a supply run he’s also in charge of the camp’s security, which means as soon as he enters camp he’s shifting gears into a totally different mode where his priority is the safety of the heart of his group, Crater Lake. Add to that, managing situations in which people themselves might pose a risk, or other survivors stumbling into their camps who might be dangerous, and you get a guy who is not in the mood to deal with bullshit. Because of this, he tends to be unfriendly when approached. He’s blunt, annoyed, and will insult someone the moment they start to even lightly tap his nerves. He doesn’t care that he’s off-putting.

• Takoda also understands the value of relaxing. At the end of the day when downtime is had and chores/work is done, you’ll catch him with the rest of the survivors hanging out at the pavilion, having a drink, or playing cards. This is when he shows that he is, in fact, capable of engaging in small talk as opposed to shutting it down immediately. He just chooses not to most of the time.

• It’s difficult to tell whether Takoda likes you or hates you because his language is to be an asshole. No one is safe from a jab or a tease, though some may get harsher treatments than others, depending on the dynamic. Even his compliments are insulting. “Wow, you actually hit the target this time”, etc.

• Takoda knows that his camp is not an army camp, but that doesn’t stop him from talking like it is one. He can get forceful in a way a sergeant would because…he’s a sergeant. If someone needs pushing he will tear into them until they get their asses into his gear thanks to years of serving as a drill sergeant.

Abilities:
• He knows how to handle your basic weapons better than your average civilian thanks to his time in the army. Guns, knives, explosives, etc.

• He has a strategic mind when it comes to a battlefield, surveying land, finding weaknesses in defenses and security.

• Has Basic Combat Training.

• Leadership skills.

• He’s physically fit, and being 6ft he can do some damage. He’s well versed in physical fitness.

• Can speak the Lakhota language almost fluently.

• Knows the very basics of a couple of languages, mostly for basic effective communication. (Spanish, Mandarin, Russian)

• He’s good at training others in a disciplined manner.

Inventory: • M9 handgun with a full magazine (15 rounds)

• A pocked sized notebook he carries that has a drawn map of Crater Lake inside

• An exaggerated and silly drawing of himself he keeps in his back pocket

Eternal Reward: He wants the world he comes from to be free of the Judge and to go back to what it used to be before they invaded.

Goals/Ideas:
I mostly want to focus on relationships with Takoda, and forcing him to have actual connections with people. I also want to explore all the existentialism that comes with the setting, seeing how that's a pretty big theme in his own world. He's so used to ignoring the chance to make connections or focus on anything too long term, knowing full well humanity won't recover from the invasion and will eventually be gone, that being in a position where the expiration date isn't constantly pressing on him will leave him unsure of how to feel, act, or what to do with his time, and I would like for him to learn how to "live" as opposed to just "surviving", if that makes sense.

world info

° This man will do whatever it takes to keep him and his community from harm. Can and has done some morally questionable things for the good of the camp. Got a problem with it? Tough shit.

° Head of munitions and organizes patrols, does not tolerate slacking off or not taking the job seriously. Will break a nose as an example.

° Absolutely can be the least chill, but actually does in fact have chill despite this. Usually drinks a little at camp when the duties are done for the day, makes small talk but doesn't like to get into much beyond that because that's how people talk about feelings and they're all gonna die anyway let's just not go there okay?

° His ex-wife left him for a man named Ron because he has a cow. Hey, cows are rare. He'd have left him for a cow too. This fact does not bother him so much (his wife was the kinda gal that tries to stab you with a fork because you didn't want any more of her pancakes) so much as the fact that the man is named Ron and talks about himself in the third person. He fixates on this endlessly. "The fuck kind of a name is 'Ron'? It's just a sound. It's stupid."

° Really likes to play cards and various other games to pass the time when time needs to be passed. Otherwise, work, work, work.

° Army sergeant, served as a drill sergeant for a few years first.
